5 Signs Your Interior Doors Need to Be Replaced (Not Just Adjusted)

Interior doors take a lot of daily use and most homeowners don’t think about them until something goes wrong. Here are five signs that it might be time to replace, not just adjust, your interior doors.

1. The Door Swings Open or Closed on Its Own
This usually means the frame is out of plumb or the door is warped. Adjusting the hinges might help temporarily, but if the frame itself is the problem, a new prehung door and frame is often the better long-term fix.

2. There Are Visible Gaps Around the Frame
Drafts, sound transfer, and light coming through around the door all point to a poor fit between the door and frame — or a frame that has shifted over time. This is common in older Edmonton homes that have settled.

3. The Door Sticks or Drags
A little seasonal swelling is normal with wood. But if your door drags consistently, the issue is likely the frame or a warped door slab that won’t improve on its own.

4. The Finish Is Beyond Repair
Deep scratches, chipped paint that won’t take a new coat, or hollow-core doors that have been damaged are often cheaper to replace than restore.

5. You’re Renovating Anyway
If you’re updating your flooring, painting, or redoing trim, it’s the perfect time to install new doors. The space is already disrupted and fresh doors tie a renovation together beautifully.
